JEAN-MARC & VALENTINA Caimi&Piccinni said:
A few years ago, we came back from Normandy with some photos.
We’d scanned the negatives, made the proofs, done the editing.
Printed everything with a Xerox. The dummy book was hand-sewn.
We thought it looked good.
A common friend saw the work. She took us to Arles, to the Collège
St Charles. Les Rencontres. A book stand.
The man wasn’t tall. Handsome, light blue eyes. Elegant.
But there was something else. A different light. A wild look.
Untamed. He sat down. Looked at the booklet, page after page.
He didn’t say anything.
“It’s perfect,” he then murmured. “I’ll be your publisher.
I’ll pay for everything.” That’s how we got to know each other.
We’ve met Pierre other times. Paris Photo. His place, center
of Paris. Then he called us. He asked us to curate his work.
In his house there’s a riso printer for zines. Like this one
you’re holding. The printer gets prepared. The tea gets prepared.
Very bitter, concentrated like black ink.
Later on we drink alcohol. For Pierre only Champagne.
Friends come by. We talk about photography, publishing,
relationships. There are no compromises. Either you love it
or you can’t keep up.
The printer makes noise. The first proofs come out. We see
our vision, our editing on paper. Pierre’s photos. Photos taken
with a phone. If you look closely, you see the tenderness.
The fragility. The rebellion.
You can see the irony, the joy, the boredom, the seduction.
The beauty and the banality. The truth and the desire.
We saw it.
A balade*. And a ballad.
