The 8th Fotobookfestival will be a special Kassel / Beijing edition in cooperation with Éditions Bessard, Paris, from 11 June until 3 July at the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing. With Claudia Jaguaribe, Guy Tillim, Han Lei, Ramon Pez, Sybren Kuiper, Ruben Lundgren, Pierre Bessard, Chen Shen, Yuan Di and many more. Special photobook design workshops will be on Thursday 9 June with Sybren Kuiper (SYB) and Friday 10 June with Ramon Pez. The festival weekend will be from 11 to 12 June, the book exhibitions are from 11 June until 3 July. Hope to meet you in Beijing!

Be Street : Bienvenue Ed. Parles nous du concept de ta dernière œuvre “Adventures in the Nearby Far Away”?
EXTRAIT BE STREET: Adventures in the Nearby Far Away est un journal photographique de mes nombreuses visites à Catalina Island sur la côte sud de la Californie. Je viens ici depuis que je suis tout petit et je prend des photos de cet endroit depuis les années 90. Toutes les photos son analogues. Les Editions Bessard m’ont proposé d’en faire un livre dans ce style. Au début, j’étais sceptique parce que je ne suis pas fan du format accordéon. Puis je me suis mis à réfléchir au type de projet qui pourrait s’adapter à ce format. Et c’est là que je me suis rappelé de cette série de photos prises à Catalina et que j’avais prévue de publier sous forme de fanzine. J’avais fait des collages avec les dizaines de photos prises de l’horizon. Et en fait, ce format s’est avéré être parfait pour ce genre de collages car je pouvais montrer le collage en entier sur une page continue.
B.S : Selon quels critères as-tu fait la sélection des photos pour ce projet ?
Je voulais en faire un journal photos mais rien de trop personnel. On se fiche de voir des photos de ma femme et de mes amis tout sourire pendant les vacances. Le but etait de montrer cet endroit. Les gens, le paysage, les légendes urbaines d’un endroit lourd d’histoire. Un endroit que mes grands-parents fréquentaient pendant leur jeunesse.
B.S : Quel est ton souvenir le plus cher de Santa Catalina ? Tu te rappelles de ta première visite sur l’île ?
Oui, je partage une histoire d’enfance dans le livre. Mes plus beaux souvenirs sont avec mes grands-parents. Ils louaient une maison pour une semaine chaque année. Ils nous racontaient tout ce qui avait changé au cours des années. On prenait le bateau tous les matins pour explorer les environs. Mon grand-père était un matelot et adorait être en mer. Je me rappelle des bateaux de pêches qui revenaient sur la plage après leur pêche à l’espadon. C’était choquant de voir ces belles créatures accrochées tout sanglotant, je n’oublierais jamais.
