Zine Collection “Girls” by the Chinese artist Luo Yang

Luo Yang, female, born in 1984, liaoning Province China. Graduated from the lu Xun academy of Fine arts, now lives and works in Beijing as a freelance photographer.

« Girls » has been an ongoing photography project since 2007, and has involved me shooting the girls around me in an attempt in which – through the lens of the camera – to grasp some sense of understanding of their lives.

The images included in the « Girls » series charter a period of personal development, with reflections between myself and other girls around me apparent in each shot. Whilst I was growing up, in order relieve myself of loneliness, I tried to find a sense of comfort through the stillness of the photographic image. These images are both private and non-private.

« Girls » is weak and fragile but also persistent and decisive, as the subjects depicted continue to face the tough process of inner growth in a reality ground in friction, full of hope and latent crisis. This duality of fragility and inner strength is a key component to the photographs, where the girls staging is cast into friction with their inner resistence and awkwardness towards being made a subject of. Their own portrayal, after all, is out of their own control, and yet I feel that in this very situation, there is a glimpse of real truth and beauty. Their world is one which is subject to the weight of age and, as the girls lives become intwined with their surrounding society, they find themselves rooted and engulfed within an ever advancing state of uncontrollable perceptions.

I hope that these fragments of lives depicted within my photographs will find a life less tainted within this world, and that therein the girls impending immersion into the struggles of adulthood will remain suspended.couv-seule-LUOYANG

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1955, Bill Henson’s photographs have been seen in major international exhibitions and survey shows over the past 25 years. Venues include the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, the Venice Biennale, most Australian museums, and gallery shows in the United States. Henson lives and works in Sydney.

Australian artist Bill Henson is a passionate and visionary explorer of twilight zones, of the ambiguous spaces that exist between day and night, nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs of landscapes at dusk, of the industrial no-man’s land that lies on the outskirts of our cities, and of androgynous girls and boys adrift in the nocturnal turmoil of adolescence are painterly tableaux that continue the tradition of romantic literature and painting in our post-industrial age. The rich chiaroscuro, the oscillating light, and the masterful composition of his photographs map enigmatic states that escape rationalism’s iron grip, providing a much-needed antidote to a culture that increasingly looses itself in a numbing vortex of blinking screens and glittering surfaces.

Bill Henson is one of Australia‟s leading contemporary artists. Born in Melbourne in 1955, Henson had his first solo exhibition, at the age of 19, at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1975. He has since exhibited extensively in Australia and overseas, including New York, London, Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Montreal, Barcelona, Vienna and Amsterdam. In the same year he had a solo exhibition at the Centro de Fotografia, University of Salamanca, Spain. In 2005 a comprehensive survey of his work was held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne. This landmark survey show attracted record visitor numbers for a contemporary art exhibition in Australia. In 2006 Henson exhibited a major body of work in Twilight: Photography in the Magic Hour at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Bill Henson‟s work is to be found in every major public collection in Australia including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Gallery of Australia. Overseas collections include the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, the Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna, the Sammlung Volpinum, Vienna, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Bill Henson is a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs are painterly tableaux that continue the traditions of romantic literature and painting.

Hensons elegant, formal photographs – of battered landscapes and fragile, wispy youths – resemble nothing so much as Flemish still-lifes; rarely has colour photography captured so profoundly the furry texture of night time.

Three Years (Limited Edition) Chen JiaGang Limited Edition of 600 copies, 168 pages! 240mm x 365 mm
